The campus Left went berserk and Peterson started getting invited onto popular talk shows to rail earnestly against “post-modern Neo-Marxists”. This vision of two parallel societies may be dispiriting for early fans of Rubin — after all, this was the host who promised to bring together people of all different political stripes. There was something genuinely counter-cultural about the way in which figures from the Reaganite Right all the way through to the progressive Left gathered under Dave’s roof to exchange and debate ideas.
Brooks contrasts the reactionary Left-baiting of the IDW with his own fruitless search – encapsulated in the pages of the socialist magazine Jacobin— for a “rejuvenated, humane, internationalist, and appealing version of the politics of the Finland station”. This is a welcome blast against the dominant fetish for what Brooks describes as “drawing artificial lines between cultures”. Campus-driven heresy hunts are a distraction and a turn-off for ordinary people, as Brooks notes. Damning someone for being male or having a white skin may provide some cheap and ephemeral thrill, but it is not a serious approach to winning political power. As Brooks writes, “comradeship and solidarity across racial and national lines… is going to have to be central to any kind of viable movement to achieve a better world”. Underlying much of this, Brooks argues, is an acceptance of prevailing inequalities — economic, gender, and racial — as natural.
Harris is, for example, pro gun rights but also believes in very draconian registration, testing and background checks – akin to getting a pilot’s license. But not in the same way others replying might be. For example, Rogan is OK with a little bit of a background check but largely blames gun violence mostly on mental issues. Their differences lie with the details of their beliefs.

It is extremely poor, it makes me distrust journalism as a profession, and the only reason I find myself engaging with it is to try in my small way to push back on its shallowness and reflex groupthink. It comes down to a discussion of ‘human nature’ which Leftists/Marxists/Socialists abhore and the IDW embraces. Yes, his fans may be somewhat annoying occasionaly, and there are a bunch of racists who are searching for any support they can find for their stupid theories, but the first are people who never had serious help from their communities and the second can use Peterson only if they ignore his core message. The folly of the ageing leftists is that they never outgrow the arrogance, impatience and blindness, while their passion has morphed into tired faux outrage, puritanical joylessness, and the snideness of shrivelled souls. They would always sooner run someone’s life than have a sensible discussion, which is one of the reasons why the woke appear so intellectually weak. But the irrational anger directed towards Peterson for simply telling young men to grow up and take responsibility seems to be based on darker motives.
I feel like I have to defend Butterworth here. I think he is one of the smartest thinkers on left and his reportage is second to none. He’s also been a persistent critic of the New Left and Corbynistas. Never having met him in person, I would suspect he’s simply a good old fashioned social democrat who many left leaning liberals would probably very happily agree with most of the time. But those words, liberal, left, social democrats have been devalued in the onslaught of short cut language which devalues deeply divergent views. Just as I hate the tern neo liberal – whatever that is – so with IDW.
- Those who positioned themselves to be focused entirely on the IDW and its counter-narrative efforts against the mainstream and legacy media became unable to contribute to the discussion in a meaningful way.
- Education systems can always be improved, but I think it’s expecting too much for them to take on kids already dealing with a variety of social ills and compensate for “our globalized, financialized, winner-takes-all economic structures” which also are a major factor in those social ills.
- I think traditional leftists, like the author, need to get a little angrier in the face of the untruths and abuses of Critical Theorists and their policy requests.
- Why does it seem to be nearly impossible for a journalist in almost any rag out there to present a fair and accurate picture of Jordan Peterson?

Harris put much of the blame on the influences of Twitter and Trump. “The real Trump derangement syndrome was not to have seen how appalling and dangerous and deranging it was to have a person like this get anywhere near the Oval Office,” Harris added. It sounds as if the only thing they share is a knack for being pissed off about the wrong stuff. Politically correct academia, the mainstream media, that lot.
A classical liberal who thinks there should be , racial profiling, torture, and no gun control? Claiming it was a “thought experiment” when you get called out for your regressiveness and bigotry doesn’t absolve you. The problem with Marxists is that they know nothing outside their walled garden of Marx and Hegel and Freud, and they completely bollix up Kant. My basic line on the left is that it is a Great Reaction, a lurch back to the primitive, where socialism is a return to slavery.
Not a great basis for a school of thought or a movement. That was where conservatives and “liberals” used to meet. How people think that open discussion is possible with people who are hostile to that idea is its own curiosity, and makes me wonder if some in this intellectual set are being too clever by half. The wokerati have no problems attacking their own, and the likes of Weis and Weinstein are intimately familiar with that. Yet, they cling to the fairy tale that if they talk long enough or if their argument is persuasive enough, minds will change. In college, Tyler was a FEE Campus Ambassador, President of his campus YAL chapter, and Research Intern at the John K. MacIver Institute for Public Policy.
What Is On The Dark Web
Harris is centre left and hates Trump with a passion but he also hates identity politics, which seems a reasonable position to me…. The only thing we need to be excruciatingly aware of is that in their failure they don’t manage to take down our entire decent society with them for that generation. Decent humans will be able to rebuild free society but there can be tragic losses for a time in that temporary collapse of civilisation. Western democracies that are built on free choice and individual worth must stand firm and not give Neo-Marxists and anarchists any quarters in our defence of what we have achieved. It’s not perfect admittedly but that’s why we thrive every day to make it better for our children and not tear it down to satisfy the Left’s animalistic impulses.
Of course if the standard meaning were applied, the author would find it much harder to trash. It is precisely this kind of intellectual dishonesty that has made today’s Left so repellent to people like me. In other words, your critique of “power” is lacking. However, I agree that Ben Shapiro seems like an insufferable twit. Why does it seem to be nearly impossible for a journalist in almost any rag out there to present a fair and accurate picture of Jordan Peterson? All we ever get is an invidious caricature that totally fails to represent who he is and what he stands for.
Whats Dark Web
I’d almost characterize the IDW as Radical Centrists—which alloys ideas from both liberals and conservatives into a kind, practical, and unconventional middle. I’ve listened extensively to the work of all these core members—with the exception of the conservative Ben Shapiro who I’ve only watched as a guest with Sam Harris—and in my view the unifying characteristic was the willingness to honestly discuss controversial topics in Good Faith™. The New York Times piece had a different take, saying it was about going against your own in-group.

Brooks concedes that one should not be an “uncritical apologist for everything that happened in the years after Lenin arrived at the Finland Station” — which is big of him — but he contrasts the reactionary politics of the IDW with his own dream of Communism with a human face. Indeed, this sort of Socialist wish-thinking was once likened by the Polish philosopher Leszek Kolakowski to trying to cook a “dish of fried snowballs”. Leninism leads to famine, terror and forced labour camps — even if Jordan Peterson and the IDW say so.
